Tutorial: How To Share Files and Folders Within Groups Using Ubuntu Server and Samba as a PDC

May 08, 2012 By: frank Category: Ubuntu File Server

In this tutorial I demonstrate how to share files and folders with users within groups. I created two groups, students and teachers on my Ubuntu Server. I then created share folders for each of the two groups. I created a folder for the teachers to share documents with each one another. No other group has access to this folder. I also created a folder for the students. Teachers can create content in this folder while students can read and execute files in this folder, but cannot write or create any content. This allows teachers to share files with students without giving students full control over the folder. I have seen similar setups at many schools and companies. I use Samba as my Primary Domain Controller (PDC) and a XP Machine as my workstation. After I have connected to the PDC I create network drives for the folders created on the Ubuntu Server. I log in as a teacher and students to demonstrate the different rights each user/group has.

I hate Ubuntu, but my mother-in-law loves it

May 01, 2012 By: frank Category: Ubuntu

For this peculiar end-user, given her usage parameters, she doesn’t take Windows or yet a Mac. Ubuntu is an idealistic solution. And yeah, I notwithstanding detest the way Unity is presently implemented. But that doesn’t matter — it’s okay for the majority of end-users away there, and for my anxiety and acid reflux, it’s a godsend. Read more here
